Old Japanese houses carry a distinctive earthy, mineral scent that most people dismiss as nostalgia. But for a materials researcher, that smell is data. It points directly to the hygroscopic behavior of traditional plastered walls — specifically, how calcium sulfate dihydrate and clay-based finishes interact with humidity cycles over decades. What your nose detects is the signature of a wall system actively doing its job: absorbing, buffering, and slowly releasing moisture-bound volatile compounds. Modern gypsum board does the same chemistry, but we’ve engineered away the evidence. This raises an uncomfortable question: have we also engineered away some of the performance?
